GOING FOR GOLD
We always talk about value here at MBPE, about not being ripped off, about products having the right price tag. Of course we don’t mind spending, but it has to be worth it…
Enter the £1,000+ skincare products.
Yes, you read that right, no typos here. There are a number of products now available that cost over £1,000. And we’ve had the rare pleasure to road test one last month.
But first, let’s understand how any beauty product can have a price tag of that level. There are two reasons, and it’s simply about economics. The more units a company produces of something, the lower the unit price becomes. So products that are rare, are more expensive. Secondly the scarcity and value of the raw materials. Again, the more expensive the ingredients, the more expensive the product. For most of us, we just wouldn’t shop above a certain unit cost. But think about it in couture terms. We can’t all afford catwalk, but there are some people that can, and wouldn’t we all secretly love to have a really special something in our closet that makes us feel wonderful. A guilty pleasure where the spend is outrageous but the joy it brings leaves us giddy with excitement. Well, it’s much the same with these seriously expensive beauty treatments. We’d all probably love one, but not all of us could afford one.
But are these beauty products gimmicks reserved for the uber wealthy, or are they really something special? And are the gold leaf and diamond dust moisturisers that are available now at £1,000+ a glimpse at the ingredients of the future that we’ll see mass marketed one day in Aldi? For many of us, that’ll be our only hope of ever trying our something of this calibre.
The benefits of gold have been well documented and actually the use of gold in beauty and skin care goes way back with evidence of its historical use by the Japanese, Chinese, Romans, and Egyptians. In fact, Cleopatra herself was known to use Gold Carat Face Masks to keep her skin glowing and looking youthful. Today, while it’s not entirely proven, there have been a number of scientific studies which have suggested that using this precious metal on the skin can slow the ageing process and brighten the complexion. Gold particles have been found to increase and boost collagen (which keeps out skin plump and more youthful). They have also been found to remove bacteria from the skin, promote lymphatic drainage and stimulate blood circulation. So from reducing fine lines and wrinkle, to the removing of bags and under eye puffiness and even on to brightening skin, making it more luminescent and reversing sun damage, this is a beauty secret that really could be worth its weight in gold. But yes worth is what we are talking here. Because real 24 Carat Gold does come with a price tag…
We’ve had the pleasure thanks to distributor and MBPE member Odelia Zucker to try out the Black Pearl 24 Carat Devine Body Cream. Flakes of real 24-karat gold provide authentic royal richness in this creamy body butter, formulated with shea butter and coconut oil for enhanced hydration and a beautifully smooth feel. The cream itself is thick, rich, smells divine with a capital D, and the gold leaf it contains gives the cream a delightful shimmer.
And it’s not only gold that is central to this sumptuous cream, but all Black Pearl products contain 18 amino acids and 27 Dead Sea minerals. And the list of ingredients doesn’t stop there. Hyaluronic Acid, pure collagen, Tahitian black pearl powder (all the way from French Polynesia), plant extracts and seaweed all combine to give this cream an enviable right to sit on the shelves of the finest stores in the world. They say it’s the ingredients that make or break a product. There are indeed Gold Creams out there already for under £50, but many of these add the collodial gold to a standard cream. The Devine Cream is something else, every single one of its ingredients have been meticulously sourced from every corner of the world.
In the run up to the holidays, we shared this pot of luxury out between 10 very lucky MBPE members giving them each the equivalent of £100 in value of cream. Let’s see what some of them thought:
“I used a teensy bit on my neck and chest each day and I really could feel the difference. My skin felt softer than ever before and smelt wonderful. I really did use every last little bit. I just have to now work out who I can convince to gift it to me :)” Nicky H
“Wow, just wow. My skin feels instantly plumper and more succulent. That smell is just something else.” Joanna Burns
“I used my sample to apply to my arms and décolletage before an awards ceremony (yes we won). Never in a million years did I a) think that a product could cost this much money, or b) wish I had that money to spend on it”. Tammy Inkster-Sanders
And the word from Justine?
“TO BE HONEST, THIS IS A GREAT GIFT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE MONEY. IT’S A TALKING POINT, A LUXURY THAT’S AFFORDABLE FOR ONLY A FEW. BUT FOR THOSE FEW, WHO CAN, THEN WHY THE HELL NOT! IT SMELLS GREAT, HAS FANTASTIC INGREDIENTS, FEELS SUMPTUOUS TO THE TOUCH. BUT FOR MY POCKET? I’LL BE STICKING TO MY NIVEA Q10”
And the Devine cream isn’t the only Gold infused product available from Black Pearl, there’s also a £1,500 pot of magnetic gold leaf facemask and a selection of other complementary – and equally as shiny and exciting – products in the range.
If there are any MBPE members out there who are in the market for a splurge and want to get their hands on products from the Black Pearl 24K Gold range before they (no doubt) hits the shelves in any luxury store worth its weight in gold please email us email@example.com and we will put you in touch with Odelia.
